What is a “parallel”? Most trading card sets have a standard “base” card for each player, then reprint the same card design in different colours or foil finishes, usually with a limited print run (a fixed number ever made). These reprints are called parallels.
What does the number after the slash mean? A card marked “/99” means only 99 of that exact card were ever produced. This is the print run, and it’s the single most useful thing to check first – it narrows down which parallel you’re looking at far more than colour alone.
Why does the same colour and print run sometimes have more than one answer? Some sets reuse the same colour and print run across genuinely different foil finishes (e.g. a fine sparkly texture vs. large angular facets). The only way to tell them apart is to look closely at the actual texture – which is exactly what the reference gallery above is for.
Do I need special equipment to check this? No – good lighting and a close look (or a phone camera zoomed in) is normally enough to tell finishes apart once you know what to look for.
